On September 11, 2001, the world changed forever as terrorist attacks struck the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. While the entire nation mourned the loss of countless lives, many were directly affected by the tragedy. Berry Berenson, the wife of Anthony Perkins, the original Norman Bates of “Psycho,” was one of the many casualties on that fateful day.

Berenson was born in New York City on April 14, 1948, and grew up in an artistic family as her father was a celebrated writer and her mother was an actress. She was raised in Paris and London and only returned to the United States to attend college. After landing a modeling contract with the Eileen Ford Agency, Berenson quickly rose to fame and was featured on the covers of magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar.

In the mid-1970s, Berenson’s career transitioned from modeling to acting, and she appeared in several films, including “Remember My Name” and “Cat People.” She married Anthony Perkins in 1973 and had two sons, Oz and Elvis.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, Berenson boarded American Airlines Flight 11 with her dog, Nellie. The flight departed from Boston, headed towards Los Angeles. However, just 15 minutes after its takeoff, the hijackers struck, crashing the plane into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Berenson, her dog, and all of the other people on the flight perished in the tragic event.

Berenson’s death was a shock to Perkins, who had lost his life partner so tragically and suddenly. He passed away in 1992 from complications related to AIDS, leaving their two sons without both parents.

Many have paid tribute to Berenson in various ways since her death, including a memorial bench in Central Park and several charitable contributions from her family. The world may never forget the tragedy and devastation caused by the events of September 11, but it is also important to remember those who lost their lives, like Berry Berenson, who will be remembered always for her talent, beauty, and kindness.
