What is the true story behind the movie Sophie Scholl: The Final Days (2005)?

The movie Sophie Scholl: The Final Days (2005) is based on the true story of Sophie Scholl, a German anti-Nazi political activist and member of the White Rose resistance movement during World War II.

Sophie Scholl and her brother Hans, along with other members of the White Rose, distributed leaflets denouncing Hitler’s regime and spreading anti-war messages. On February 18, 1943, Sophie and Hans were caught distributing the sixth and final edition of their leaflets at the University of Munich. They were arrested and interrogated by the Gestapo, and although they initially denied involvement, Sophie eventually confessed and was charged with high treason.

Sophie and Hans were tried in a show trial and found guilty. On February 22, 1943, they were executed by guillotine at a prison in Munich. Before her execution, Sophie said, “How can we expect righteousness to prevail when there is hardly anyone willing to give himself up individually to a righteous cause? Such a fine, sunny day, and I have to go, but what does my death matter, if through us thousands of people are awakened and stirred to action?”

The movie portrays Sophie’s interrogation, trial, and execution in a way that closely follows historical accounts. It was critically acclaimed and received numerous awards for its portrayal of Sophie’s bravery and conviction in the face of Nazi oppression.
